This iPhone 6 case harvests energy from external radio waves

По данным компании, более 90 процентов энергии, что смартфоны использовать для поддержания голоса и данных соединений тратится на воздухе. Дело представила сегодня Никола Labs может захватить эту энергию и использовать ее для зарядки смартфона, предположительно расширения срок службы аккумулятора iPhone 6 примерно на 30 процентов. 

Чтобы включить эту волшебную возможность зарядки, дело использует два куска технологии, разработанные и запатентованные в Университете штата Огайо. I approached this four-week living with the iPhone 6 experiment with a lot of caution because of what I knew would be sub-par battery life on Apple’s flagship. My fears, however, turned out to be blown out of proportion. Interestingly, this experiment has made me reconsider priorities. I found little real-life change to my habits: just as I plugged in my Android phone (I've recently lived with the Galaxy S5 for a few months, also a few weeks with the Note 4) overnight, I did the same with the iPhone. 

What was particularly revealing is that my mind kept coming back to remind that it was not battery longevity, but another feature that contributed most to my satisfaction with how satisfactory the smartphone experience is: re-charge time. Being able to go for a quick pit stop, and have your phone recharged to some 75% in just half an hour is what contributes most to my feeling of an untethered, truly mobile experience. And if there was one feature I would wish for most in the iPhone 6s it would not be a larger battery, but something different: fast recharging times. Currently, and somewhat strangely, it is an exotic phone from China that excels in this: the Oppo Find 7, with its ultra-fast, VOOC charging technology.

Conclusion

Camera specs: what is it that really matters?

The iPhone 6 features an 8-megapixel main camera. That's less than the 13-megapixel shooter on the LG G3, less than the 16-megapixel cameras on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4, and it's much less than the 20-megapixel cameras on Sony's Xperia Z3 and earlier flagships. Does this make the iPhone 6 an inferior camera? Some may shout out a confident 'yes' - in the general case, having less megapixels translates into less fine detail into images, but detail is just one aspect of an image, and arguably, one of the less important ones (unless we're speaking about landscape images that professional photographers capture and use for gigantic prints). If you want a proof, just look at our camera comparisons and polls where the 20-megapixel Xperia Z3 consistently loses to cameras with much less megapixels.

It's important to understand that Apple is not just saving money by not including a camera with a higher megapixel count, but - just like with its decision to use a dual-core chip rather than fall for the octa-core trend - the 8-megapixel resolution of the iSight camera is a conscious and rational decision. Camera theory is a complicated matter, but one generally accepted rule is that pixel size does matter in many occasions. Apple makes a point that its camera features 'large 1.5-micron pixels', and that's an important distinction from all the rest smartphone makers that use much smaller, 1.1-micron pixels (save for HTC at the moment). There are some physical limitations related to pixel size, and most importantly when a camera packs a lot of pixels on a small sensor it becomes very susceptible to the negative effects of diffraction. We have also seen cameras with high megapixel count generally perform less than ideal in low-light.

The takeaway from all this is not that 8 megapixels of resolution is the end-all be-all of smartphone cameras, but that looking at resolution tells you very little about the actual quality of the images that has much more to do with the way the camera exposes, captures colors, the easy of use so that a skilled photographer can frame and shoot quickly, and not miss the magic of the moment that great photos are all about.

iOS 8: the agony and ecstasy

We've already done a comprehensive review of iOS 8, so there is no need to repeat things all over again here. A very quick recap is that iOS 8 features a beautifully simple interface that just works, with some quirks that we’ll speak about later on.

At the same time, it is still surprising for me as someone with an Android habit to see how ridiculously tedious it is to do simple things on iOS like changing the wallpaper or adding a new ringtone.

Customization as a whole remains a sore spot for the iOS platform: you don’t have true live wallpapers (you have Apple's dynamic images, but those are hardly a full-blown alternative), you don't have true widgets (again, iOS 8 adds widgets to the notification bar, but not to the home panel, which feels like a half-baked solution), you don’t have the option to change the appearance of icons, and - naturally - you have zero of the complete overhaul capabilities of Android launchers and custom ROMs.

Is this a real problem? Despite Apple's community denial, fact remains that Apple has been consistently behind Android in terms of customization options, and the company is now playing catch-up: it has done so with the adoption of an Android-like notification center, it has done so by allowing custom keyboards, and it seems that Apple is slowly but surely moving towards giving more and more customization options to its users.

Display: the underdeserved hype around resolution, and the overlooked importance of color accuracy

Lately, smartphone makers have gone on a wild race to increase the resolution of smartphone displays: we saw displays with a resolution of 720 x 1280 (720p), then 1080p, then quickly another jump to a Quad HD (1440 x 2560 pixels) resolution, while Apple - puzzlingly for some - sticks with a 4.7” display with a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels. The average spec-counting crows are quick to summon hell and high water on Apple for such allegedly short-sighted decision that seemingly puts the iPhone in the stone edge of technology. The truth, however, is more complicated than that, as mathematical analysis shows that the human eye finds very little visible difference between resolution going over pixel densities of 320ish ppi (the iPhone 6 has 326ppi).

What gets much less attention - while at the same time being a factor with such huge variances with big significance for the quality of an image - is the color accuracy of displays. Apple's iPhone 6 display delivers very good color with none of the plaguing issues like ghosting that are typical of some AMOLED displays. Comparatively speaking, it is among the best smartphone displays in terms of color calibration. 

This does not mean it's perfect: being an avid night reader, I've found the level of minimum brightness on the iPhone 6 to be too bright, which makes for an uncomfortable, eye-strain-inducing experience. Also, color saturations are slightly off and the screen is just slightly bluish, whereas I would prefer seeing Apple stick closer to the industry standard color temperature with less of that cold tonality.

Apple’s event announced a few days ago, displayed new products, upgrades and a new operating system that will make our lives easier.
One of the most important novelties is the new digital paying system – the so-called Apple Pay – that will roll-out as soon as Monday.
Apple Pay will join the market next to iOS 8.1, an important update granting access to iCloud Photo Library. The iCloud drive will let you store photos from all your devices online and comes to replace the Photo Stream. Yosemite, the new Apple OS announced a few days ago, is a beautiful, translucent working environment, easy to work on. It also gives you the possibility to move your files and work on from an Apple device to another without any painless effort.

During yesterday’s event other treats were revealed:

• the iPad Air 2: a powerful, very thin device with an A8x chip that makes it way faster than the first edition of iPad Air (with about 40%); this tablet also comes with a rear camera of 8 megapixels! The product is also equipped with the TouchID system, but this helps you only to make purchases online, not in the real life; or, at least, not yet.
• iPad Mini 3 is not that spectacular as iPad Air 2. Like the iPad Air 2, it displays a Touch ID sensor. Its rear camera is of only 5 megapixels, which is a bit disappointing, if we consider the 8 mpx camera that comes with the new iPad Air 2!
  Both tablet computers come in 3 shades: silver, space gray and gold.
• we now have the chance to test the new Mac with Retina display. This spectacular device has a 27-inch screen with a resolution of 14.7 million pixels – 7 times more pixels than any modern, high-definition set has. It’s also extremely thin with its 5 mm body.
• Mini Mac got updated too. It’s a lot faster and has a new Fusion drive that comes both with the new Mac and Mac mini. This technology provides a speedy and spacious alternative to other data storage systems, as you can read here.

How to Block Unwanted Calls on iOS and Android

Telemarketers, bill collectors or a crazy ex harassing you: what do these have in common? We are not keen on receiving calls from any of them, anytime. If you’re an Android or iOS user there are a few simple ways to block unwanted calls on your device…

Living in the age of smartphones means that any person in the world can reach you through your mobile whenever and wherever you are, an idea that isn’t too thrilling for anyone who has annoying relatives or friends who have the habit of calling at the worst times just to gossip or ask for a favor. You can keep dodging unwanted calls by silencing the ringtone, but why do that when there’s a more elegant method to block unwanted calls if you’re an iOS or Android user?

Before iOS 7, anyone using an iPhone had either to pay their carrier extra fees to block selected numbers from reaching them, or to use a jailbreak tweak, but iOS 7 finally introduced some neat call blocking features that include SMS and FaceTime blocking.

• If the number you want to block is in your contact list you just have to go to Settings->Phone->Blocked->Add New, and then select the contact from the list. When a blocked contact tries to reach you their call will go straight to voicemail without making a sound, and if they facetime you it won’t work either.
• If the number you wish to block recently called you but is not in your contact list, touch the blue (i)symbol that appears near the number, and scroll down to the ‘Block this Caller’ option and select it.
• If you want to block a number that hasn’t called you and also isn’t in your contacts you must save it in your phone book first.

The methods above are for blocking calls, if you want to block incoming SMS messages from someone you must open the Messages app, open the message thread for that person and then touch the blue ‘Contact’ button in the top right. The you have to tap on the blue (i) and scroll to “Block this Caller’.

On Android there isn’t an universal method to block calls that works all devices as this depends on the phone’s manufacturer. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has built-in call blocking features that are easy to find: if you touch and hold your finger on a contact from your phone book or on a number that recently called you a small menu will pop up and one of the options that you can select is “Add to reject list”. If you use voicemail the blocked numbers will go straight to voicemail and if you don’t calls are automatically rejected without the phone ringing. The numbers you add to the reject list can be edited from Call Settings->Call Rejection->Auto Reject List.

If you have an Android phone and you can’t find or the manufacturer didn’t provide call blocking settings you can use one of the many Call Blocking apps that you can find in the Play Market. The most popular are Call Control, Mr Number and Call Blocker, and they are all good at screening calls and messages. Mr Number also has a ‘Spam Database’, where you can check other user’s comments about numbers so you can identify spam or bill collectors easily.
